So today went to a bank I had called previously and who said they had boxes I could get.

Went in, asked, they called the vault person to check. was cool, said they'd be back with the boxes. ... they came back. ... with a cart... (for one box of halves, one box of pennies) they put them on the counter, I handed over the cash, and it was good. no ordering, no account, no charge.

anyway, sorted through half of it so far, no silver yet. but TWO Proofs, 1981, and a bicentennial. they aren't pristine, but they are at least to my eye, in relatively decent condition.

a couple questions.
according to the beginner's guide, after 2001 are not meant for circulation. ... so what does this mean in practical value? (and is that inclusive of 2001's, or strictly just AFTER 2001?) I have $8 FV in 2002 and later, many are pretty nice. would these be worth enough over FV to take them to a coin shop? (my interest in Numismatic value is generally nill beyond what I can sell it for)

this site: http://cointrackers.com/Kennedy-Half-Dollar.php
seems to regard just about all of the non-silver halfs to have a numismatic value of at least $2.... is this just crazy, or whats that about?

heres hoping for the rest of the box.. heheh.

I've heard of people getting a premium for the nifc's but its pretty tough to get rid of them.

Please take the time to read previous post and the beginner's guide. This will help answer many of the questions you have and will have in the future.

The 2001's were the last circulated half dollars and are fairly common to find.. And the 2002-pres. clad halves don't really have much value over face in circulated condition but I save them because they do have low mintages and they are somewhat hard to find in circulation. I've found a lot more silver halves than NIFC halves over the past couple of years.

Good luck on the rest of the box & HH

Finished it off, found two more proof's, some pretty nice looking newer ones, but I don't think they were perfect enough to actually be notable with nothing else "special" about them.

the coins of note from the box totals to:

4 total Proofs:
1977, 1978, 1981, Bicentennial.
they aren't utterly perfect, but they are pretty good condition I think.

and 2002 or later: 9x '02, 12x '03, 8x '04, 3x '05, 1x '06, 4x '08, 6x '09, 3x '10 mixed D and P,

this sounds like a pretty generous amount of NIFC's, and 4 proofs is definitely more than I expected.

i personally toss back NIFC's unless in MS67+ condition, though by no means am I a professional coin grader. There are just too many out there in circulation, only worth 50c.

wow you found more NIFC's than I did with my box and I thought I found a lot. Too bad you didn't find any silver but you might want to take a closer look at that '76S coin if you haven't already. It may just be clad but sometimes these '76S coins and '73S & '74S Ike's are hard to tell for sure. :icon_scratch:

keep on searchin' and HH

thanks, and yeah, all 4 of the proofs have very distinct layering on the edge, so no luck there.

I am figuring to visit the coin shop (never been there yet) and see what they say about the proofs, theres also an antique shop that does a lot with coins, I'll see what they say as well.

I'm thinking I might try pairing up the best of the NIFC's in P&D sets and trying the bay. if I can get at least break even after fees and shipping, and get some feedback, it'd be worth it I think.

now to get rid of them, and go through the rest of the box of pennies I grabbed with it.

I also have a box of pennies I got yesterday that I haven't even opened yet. I got $40 in cwr nic's too that I just started searching.

good luck to us both & HH. :)

I am one of those who generally keeps any clad cameos or proofs--although many folks here do not. I am attempting to put back a roll of each. Just because, and for no other reason than I like to collect coins.

apush :read2:
