Detector(s) used
Garrett Master Hunter 5, Ace 250
Hello, A couple days before the crash, I was detecting this old log house site and got a deep signal with the Ace 250 that said 8 inches and jumped back and forth between quarter, nickel and copper penny. I have been starting to run my detector in these older sites around 9 on the sensitivity scale. At about 6 inches, the signal was gone :icon_scratch: I switched from jewelry to relic and got the signal again except in high tone and not the lower tone that is associated with iron. Another inch of soil and out popped what I thought was a nickel at first. Then I saw some gold gilding and knew I had an old button :icon_thumleft: It wasn't until I got back to the car and used my magnify er, that I saw it was an Eagle button with an I in the shield. Smashed, but wonderful just the same :headbang: The backmark says "Canfield. Bro & Co." This button was about 20 ft off the road from where 50,000 Union troops were making there way to Gettysburg about 10 miles away. Thanks for looking and any advice on cleaning would be appreciated :icon_sunny: Paul :coffee2:

I forgot to mention Baltimore is also on the backmark!

hi paul yes what a find..cleaning it..do it carefully..I use a cotton bud with toothpaste and ...ahhhh...spit....cheers

nice I!!!! MR TUFF

That Eagle I has quite a bit of Gilt remaining on it. If you want to bring it out, lemon juice is the trick. Also a cool backmark for an Eagle, usually find alot of the Virginia buttons around here with that backmark which is considered a Southern Backmark "Baltimore" :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on your first CW button.

congrats! awesome find. I'm still trying to find my first.

nice button another way some clean em up is to use ammonia slightly diluted and a soft brush this way you aren't working it to much not to be used on all buttons depending on cond. some buttons should not even touch water just dry brush does it better justice. good luck .Ipersonally use both methods after you do a couple youll figure whats best for you.If i see gilt im using ammonia a brush and a cool rinse and done and some times even twice i have got great results.
