I got to get out for a half day and was psyched to find that the ground was not frozen where I wanted to hit. I hit any area that I have pounded before but got a screaming 84 on the atmax. I popped what I thought was a ct or VT copper but ended up being a kg iii which is my first kg iii. When I look at other 1775 machines Mills this coins back does not match any ideas out there of what variety it is would be appreciated. And I also pulled this really sweet tombac.

Nice find.

What makes you think it's not just a regular KGIII?

Great finds and a great start to 2020 good luck with the rest of the year

That coin is great. My coppers are almost always slick or barely identifiable. Congrats!

Grasshopper, I got sidetracked on machin's mills, but you are right it is probably a kgiii. sorry I just do not know that much about them yet since its my first one, but I am now guessing there are not tons of varieties like state coppers.

I wasnt doubting you, I've only found a few myself - none preserved as well as yours. I'm sure experts will chime in [emoji3]

It is a counterfeit. The weight is the easiest way to verify, but in the regal issued halfpennies from 1775 the staff end points to the 1 in 1775 like in the below example:

1775 is the most commonly counterfeited year for the KGIII halfpennies, but the quantity of counterfeits produced in the United States was likely dwarfed by those produced in Britain and then shipped here so barring a match to one of the known machin's mills dies, it's likely a British made contemporary counterfeit.

Always a sweet find though, and yours is in especially good shape for a dug copper so that's definitely a keeper!

thanks for the info there were things that were not matching up when ive been researching, the bouquet in relation to the "a" does not match up with mine, and the "a" in nia in relation to the shield is off as well. I know I am probably knit picking but its part of the fun part of it for me to learn as much as I can about each find, after I dig it. thanks
