Detector(s) used
Teknetics Delta 4000
got my Teknetics Delta 4000 this morning, and as soon as i set it up, i went out in my back hard to test it. didnt find anything but a few nails (rang up as dimes instead of iron?) and i keep getting a 50cent signal the entire length of my yard at 8+ inches? it was too muddy to dig for too long though

im going to take it over to my brother's property- it looks very promising

went over to my brothers today, didnt find much, infact the only thing i kept was an old shotgun shell with some of the paper cartridge left on it still. i got especially excited at one point hunting near an old tree on the property when i got a dime/quarter/50 cent piece hit and managed to dug up a mason lid jar- but the roots were too grown in to keep digging :-\ im going to order me a leshe and probably a little eagle or other tool from predatortools

also some questions- why was a lot of iron scraps ringing up as dimes? old rusty chunks of iron and iron nails. i had the discrimination all the way up so it would only get dimes-half dollars, i ended up digging a 3 foot hole for a cast iron pot lid :laughing7: still had fun though, it was my first real hunt

Hi DevilDog812,
It sounds like you have a lot of iron trash where you are which can be hiding some good targets. You might be getting the high pitch dime signals because you are not centered exactly over the target. Get some practice by setting the Delta's discriminate setting at "10". This means lowering it from the "40" that is pre-set when you first turn it on. This will allow you to hear most iron (with a grunting - low pitch sound).

Most times you will be amazed at how much crap is in a typical lawn. The Delta's 8 inch concentric coil is large enough that it will sometimes get fooled by iron which is under the outer edge of the coil. Before you dig, push the pinpoint button and find the target center. Then, let go and see if you have a good signal (high or medium pitch) or if it's an iron grunt sound. Also, if the VID numbers jump around from high to low, it's most likely junk.

That being said, be careful.. as no detector is perfect (but the Delta rarely lies). I once dug a "nail" target with my Delta just to prove it WAS a nail (it was jumping from low 20's to high 80's). I was amazed when I pulled a 1936 silver Mercury dime out of the hole - why was I getting so many iron signals? Re-checked the hole with my Garrett Pro-Pointer (a must - if you don't have one - get one) and found a nail had been right next to it.

For the money, I've found the Delta to be an amazing piece of technology and a super detector. It's important to learn what signals to ignore as much as what signals to key in on.. just takes practice, practice, practice! The 5 inch DD coil may help in trashy areas as well.

thanks for the tips! ill keep all of that in mind next time i go out :icon_thumright:

about the propointer- i was just about to order one last week, but decided i needed better digging tools first. the propointer was actually more expensive than getting a good carrying case, a lesche hand tool and a leshe digging tool combined. i have the cheap teknetics pinpointer that came with the detector for free, but you get what you pay for :laughing7:

alright, well i have my lesche hand tool and shovel and my propointer- first time using the propointer and one of the first times using the lesche digging tool, and it snaps at the base of the handle where it connects to the head >:(
go on to the colonial metal detectors site where i bought it from and says that all returns must be in unused condition- NO DAMAGES!

well there goes 60 bucks down the drain.
i dont feel like MDing for a while.

on an unrelated note- does anyone know a good short handled digger that i could buy from a website other than CMDs?
