UPDATE:

It turns out I got my first gold! I can't believe it. I just took the piece to my jeweler today, and she said that the center of the piece is 14K gold:headbang: Initially I thought that the piece was base metal due to the corrosion on the outside. She told me that the outside was probably originally plated or gold filled and the center is solid. She said the piece is a Victorian brooch most likely made in the early 1900's. It's not much, but it's gold baby! I will definitely be going back to this spot this weekend to see what else turns up!

If you want to see the original thread and more about where I found the piece you can view it here: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/494566-gold-hole-not.html

Congrats on the gold. Not everyday you see it come out of the ground.

Thanks brother! I'm excited to see what else comes out of the ground over there.

Good job and good luck

Congrats on your first Gold,,
At first glance, I thought you had a small mounted gold coin.
Keep digging those Foil ? Nickel signals and there will be more Gold

Great find. I saw the original post. I'm curious if the center piece could possibly be a gold coin love token. I definitely wouldn't want to do anything to damage the piece but I wonder if the center piece is mounted and removable? If so, it would be interesting to see if there is anything on the other side of it.

It is very interesting that you say that. When I brought the piece to the jeweler, she said that the gold piece appeared to be added. When I asked her why she thought that, she pointed out something that I noticed on the back of the brooch, but never really sunk in I guess. There is a flower imprinted on the back that is clearly meant to show up on the front center of the piece. However, this flower is covered by the gold piece on the front. So it almost definitely was an addition after the fact. The only thing I'm wondering; if there is in fact an engraving on one side of the gold piece, why is the blank side facing out? Has anyone ever seen anything like that? Really cool idea though. I will take a closer look when I get home. Thank you all for your comments and well wishes.

You say "not much"
I think it is a great little piece.
As far as the center being (originally) a gold coin I doubt that, if the 14K jeweler assessment is correct. Most period coins being 90% or 22K, even a California 1/2 dollar, "about" the size of your center piece would be about 80% (raw gold) 18-20K.

Congrats! I had my suspicions the center was good stuff in your original post. I'm glad for you that it turned out well. Woot!

Thanks brother! I'm glad your suspicions proved correct!

Thanks so much. And I completely agree that the center is almost definitely not a gold coin of any sort. I just thought it may be something like what sleepy was talking about. It looks similar to a love token, although admittedly I know nothing about them beyond a quick Google search.

Congratualtions on the gold recovery! :occasion14:

Hey Fugio!! GOLD BABY GOLD!! CONGRATS!! Neat Find!! Anyway, GOOD LUCK and GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

Thanks guys! I'm pumped to get back out there this weekend!

Really cool Fugio. I am still goldless. Someday hopefully

Congratulations !! Glad you had it checked out instead of just thinking it was "junk" jewelry.

My apologies. I somehow skipped over the part where you had already said it was 14kt, ruling out a gold coin. I had thought that maybe something had also been carved on the front center but it had disappeared due to wear. Nice looking piece though, an attention grabber.

Thanks brother, I'm sure your first is not far off. With all the simply incredible finds you have had, I have no doubt. I really just got lucky. I must be the first detectorist to hit first gold before first silver! I have never found a silver item yet, though I'm just starting to seriously commit to this hobby. I hope to find half the amazing things you have found my friend. Good luck to you!

Victorian??? Thats awesome!! Congrats
