I haven't metal detected in 9 months, and wasn't sure I ever would again. My nervous system and muscle disorders made it harder, and the weight of my GTI 2500 didn't help. In the last few months the metal detecting bug bit me pretty hard, and after a lot of research I decided it was time to get an xterra 70. The different frequency coils and weight were a big factor in my decision.
The xterra arrived yesterday and I took it out for an hour hunt. Ground balance was easy and I was on my way. I thought there would be a big learning curve, but I was wrong. I have owned Whites and Garrets and getting a minelab was a huge change. I went to my local park that is only 20 years old. No chance of old coins, but a great place to learn my machine. I love the different tones of the machine. I ran it in 4 tone mode and felt like I was at a flute festival
My first dug find was the religious pendant. It symbolizes the Mormon temple in the background and a family in the foreground, representing the belief that Parents married in the temple can be with their spouse and family for "time and all eternity", instead of til death to they part. It took about 10 minutes to figure out sounds of targets and relate them to the size in the ground. After that I was finding coins at a good pace. Pinpointing was easy, and no I do not have a pinpointer. I have dug over 20,000 coins without one, and am comfortable with my recovery technique. I thought I was having pinpointing difficulties on a few targets, but they were dimes on edge at 4 inches. The signals were loud and clear and the pinpointing was right on despite the coins being on edge.
The tones really gave excellent target separation, and a coin next to iron gave it's own distinct clear signal. I am very happy with the results of an hours time on a new machine, and the weight and balance were great for my health problems.
