Hello!
After oh...20 years without a MD(had a garret when I was about 12yrs old)..bought an Ace 250 7 days ago. Reading this great website and its many helpful posts incouraged me. I have used it every day, and it has been a somewhat quick learning experience..thanks to the many "HELP!" posts concerning the Ace and other MD issues in general.
My first weeks MD lessons learned..if you see a question in here you can answer...feel free!
First is that a cheap trowel will bend its first time out. So far Ive bent up 2 of them! Anything decent cost under $20?
All Metal Mode taught me the sounds of good and bad..running in "Coins" works but All Metal and gradually notching out trash makes me feel more...professional? LOL
The Ace really lets you know when the target is good..that "double-bell" is a coin about 95% of the time. "Bouncing" targets have not once been good so far..should I just ignore them?
Im already wishing I had a small pinpointer..tot-lot sand is no problem but digging ever widening and deeper holes in nice grass for 20 min makes me stressed out and frustrated. many coins have appeared right in the plug or hole..but many have been a struggle to find. I have scratched 2-3 clads already but what if that was a nice coin?
This is the "Todays Finds" post..so Im happy to say i found my first....drum roll....wheatie today. Funny cause I am a coin collector and I know it is worth very little..but finding that 1934 was special cause I know it sat there since World War 2 at least..waiting for ME! And then theres the clad....18 quarters, 20 dimes, 10 nickels and 34 pennies. 82 coins first week out....Im hooked again. Now all I want is a Saint Gaudens to pop up!!

Welcome aboard Marco,

This is a great site with a ton of great people. Don't be afraid to ask questions or go to the chat room. Welcome to the very addicting hobby of metal detecting/treasure hunting. Look forward to pics of your finds. Sounds like you are off to a great start this week. Keep it up.

Welcome from another newbie!! We're learning the Ace as well, our first week with two hunts under our belts.......look forward to seeing how you do with yours!!

Know what you mean about the trowel --- two hunts, I've already ordered one of the 12" Lesche diggers.......found one on the 'net for 40.00 including shipping, looking forward to giving it a try -- hopefully find enough clad to justify the expense! Guess that was my "professional" moment so far ;D

Look forward to your posts,

Steve

Thx for the replies. Oh yeah..Im trying the "potato cleaning" on that wheatie..really curious how well it works. Not cleaning coins is a Mantra for collectors..but these MD coins can be unbelievable dirty and stained!

Grats on your wheatie !
Be sure to check out Ricardo, Danimal and Khouse's posts on the Ace 250 , you'll find a TON of helpful info there. I've used my Ace 250 for
several months and it never ceases to amaze me. It's way under priced in my opinion.
keep swingin and keep us posted

At home depot, there is a nice camping shovel with a black handle (do not get the blue handled ones at wal mart). I swear i can through one of these of a cliff and it wouldn't have a scratch on it.

I can relate to your shovel problem, i've broke 4, including to "heavy duty" camping shovels.

Congrats on your first wheaty

I know what you mean about the learning curve, When i first got my ace i wanted to wrapp it around a tree. It seemed to beep at random intervals but it was telling the truth you just gotta trust it. For digging i use a folding army surplus shovel and a good aluminum garden trowel, get one that has the one piece blade and handle. I haven't broke or bent it yet. Good luck there is lots of neat stuff out there. ;D

Marco, welcome to Tnet! As you already know this is the place to be. Congrats on getting back into MDing and finding your first (of many) Wheat cents and silver to come. Now where could that $20.00 gold coin be hidding? HH and looing forword to your post.

Hello! Hello!

After oh...20 years without a MD (had a garret when I was about 12yrs old)..bought an Ace 250 7 days ago. Reading this great website and its many helpful posts incouraged me. I have used it every day, and it has been a somewhat quick learning experience..thanks to the many "HELP!" posts concerning the Ace and other MD issues in general. Welcome Back to MD! Hope you have a blast. I also use an ACE 250 and I like it!

My first weeks MD lessons learned..if you see a question in here you can answer...feel free!
First is that a cheap trowel will bend its first time out. So far Ive bent up 2 of them! Anything decent cost under $20? Yes, they give you a very very cheap trowel...hubby broke my brand new the very first day. I use a garden tool from Target. It's a FISKE, about $9.99 plus tax. It has a serraded edge on one side...and I LOVE IT!!!! I use FISKE for all my cutting needs...love their products!

All Metal Mode taught me the sounds of good and bad..running in "Coins" works but All Metal and gradually notching out trash makes me feel more...professional? LOL That Iron sound drives me up the wall....but when I hear that sweet DING DING....I'm happy!!!

The Ace really lets you know when the target is good..that "double-bell" is a coin about 95% of the time. "Bouncing" targets have not once been good so far..should I just ignore them? I usually dig EVERY TARGET! That just depends on your time and how much patience you have :)

OMG, I could not live without my pinpointer!!! That is the best invention yet...especially on the beach...had the hardest time finding an item, turned out to be a child's earring...without that wonderful, marvelous pinpointer...I probably would still be looking for it! LOL. We ordered ours from KellyCoDetectors. I can't remember the brand name, it's in the car and I'm too lazy right now to go look....sorry...but I'll post it later. I know it was $149.00 when we first bought it...think it's now 99 bucks. I am looking into something more compact though.

I have saved all the clad from last year and this year...this year we will cash them in for the boys to spend on Christmas presents. I want to thank all those wonderful folks out there that help support my boys Christmas shopping this year!!! ;)...I love finding wheaties...they are the cutest coin ever!!!! I save them from pocket change, when I count down the tills at work and from metal detecting...gotta' love those wheaties!!!However, I would not mind adding a few SILVER to my slowly growing coin collection! ;)

Yesterday I went to this church I was given permission to detect...was getting a very strong DING DING....Coin Signal and the area was fairly large for it to be a signal coin. I had all these thoughts running through my mind....OMG SOMEONE BURIED A MASON JAR or A TREASURE CHEST!!! LOL....(stay tuned for my upcoming post: The Foundry Methodist Church Finds: Day 1)...

Happy Hunting and hope you find lots of wonderful things,
Annmarie
