I was detecting in a gold rush era part of Northern California and found this under an old oak tree. Any idea what it is? We were thinking maybe a stove but the metal isn’t all that thick. I also didn’t see any sort of handle like you would expect on a stove door. Either way it was a blast to find!

Is it cast iron or is it copper?

How thin is it?

Can’t tell the size. We need something to gauge it’s size by.

It looks decorative, maybe an inlay for a door? A nice ornate piece, definitely has some history to it.

It’s iron. It’s appropriately an 1/8 inch thick, 31 inches tall and 21 inches wide.

Could it have been used as a backsplash for the stove in a kitchen? Or inside the fireplace?

Certainly possible. I’m leaning toward it being part of a parlor stove at this point.

Looks like a side on a old wood stove to me

Neat looking ornate piece. Congrats to you.

I was thinking fireplace related, I’m thing a screen. Found a pic online...
