I just started metal detecting a couple of months ago. I'm using a bounty hunter pioneer 505. I've been mostly digging at home but have been working an 1880 site here close to home. I've been frustrated to say the least. I have found some things on the old site but the good layer seems to run 6 plus inches. I'm just not getting coin sized objects out of that layer, mostly larger brass and copper pieces. Did I say I've been frustrated?...lol
Anyway, today I thought I'd do something different for a while so I took off for our ball field. I got my first ring, a silver true love waits band and a 1.34 in change! I nearly had my first silver coins too, but the dimes were 65. That was fun and not the least bit frustrating ;D
I stopped by my mothers on the way home and found the old crushed thimble.
Thanks for looking.
Mark

YOU ARE DOING GREAT.

glad you had success finally!! keep at it- i think it takes finding the right spot, too.

Very nice job on the Silver Ring! I love the Thimble too!!! Even though it is crushed, it still is a good find!!!! :) I am guessing it is from the 40's from the design.

Don't worry about the frustration level, just part of metal detecting. From your post, looks like your doing great.

Now that you've got the hard part out of the way, the rings and other good finds will start coming easier and quicker. WTG

Mark, just keep swinging!

We all look forward to your 09 finds that you will be posting.

Hey Mark......good start! My son has a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV similar to your machine. He surprises me with what he finds! Try turning your sensitivity all the way up and the disc. to minimum, you will get a lot of hits and a little more depth.

Have fun,
Rick

Way to go! Frustration = Learning Curve...just don't give up. When I first started detecting, I didn't think I would ever find any old coins. It took me over a year to find my first...a 1912 dime.Remember no site is hunted out...my favorite hunting area is a yard that I got permission to search back in 1992. The owner told me that University of Tennessee had already searched it and cleaned it out, but I was welcome to waste my time. I have found well over a hundred coins from the yard since, with the oldest being an 186? shield nickel. My first and only seated dime was found there, an 1876. I've also found 8 gold rings there, too. And then there's my pride and joy....two spurs dating Civil War period ....and part of a Confederate Belt Plate. It just goes to show that there is always something there somewhere....just go slow and easy, and you'll start pulling things out of the ground that you won't believe...but remember...the stuffs gotta be there to be found!

Congratulations on your first ring! Keep your spirits up and your coil low and youll do great!

I wonder if that ring was lost, or if it was "lost". Finding promise rings always has me wonderin :)

Good advice. The BH is a good machine. If you are finding allot of junk between 0-6 inches you may have to clean some of that out to get any deeper. Once you can do what Rick's suggests while having the BH stay stable you will be finding deeper targets. Keep at it, you had a good day and many more to come.
