Detector(s) used
White's XLT,Tesoro tiger shark, excal 2, CZ21
Went to Anna Maria Beach in Fl to practice using the machine. Settings were:
sens at 4-5 (shows aqua on decal), disc at 1. Within 5 min I had a small silver ring in chest deep water. Then I heard a low sound which did not change unless I changed to PP. If this is normal, its annoying to have to switch to PP to get the threshold sound back to a nice hum. The low sound went away if I put a quarter or ring near the coil. It even went away if I put my scoop near the coil. Does the low sound go away by changing any of the settings? Maybe
I'm not being patient enough. On the beach, I found some clad and again I couldn't get rid of the low hum unless I put my scoop near the coil. I will need to do some serious learning with the settings. I'm heading out today to Lido Beach in Sarasota. I'm slightly disappointed with the over and under shaft, 119$ option, which helps balance the weight but still doesn't help that much.
Wanda from Kellyco told me the hipmount kit put too much strain on the wires. I use a hipmount with my tiger shark without any problems. I may have to try one for the Excal if I can get one(backordered). I will be sending back to Kellyco the Knob guard and loop support. To put the knob guard on you have to remove the pins and put in screws. Dont think I want to do that. The loop support would work if the original plastic screw on the loop was longer. Cant attach the support to the loop without stripping the screw. Maybe I'll get a longer plastic screw somewhere. The instruction book from minelab is not very complete. It doesnt address some setting problems and doesnt match the detector in one of its diagrams. Maybe my detector is a newer version since it has "sub aqua" on the sens from 5-1. A CD with a tutoring lesson would have been a great Minelab feature. All in all I like the Excal ll so far and I guess I need lots of practice to get it right. Digging targets was not hard with a clad signal, but trying to find a junk target with the low hum was pretty difficult to pinpoint. I was trying to find the junk to see what was being rejected. All help would be appreciated.

Many times the Excal will retain a sound after the coil passes over it, it does not affect the performance. You can clear it by passing the coil near your scoop.

Pinpointing is a breeze, when target is located, slowly back the coil off the target, when the signal disappears target is just off the toe or heel of the coil, depending on the direction you backed the coil off.

steve you have to run your coil by the scoop to get it to go back to no hum. It is one of the quirks of the machine. Not usually much of a problem unless you are in a high iron area where you are getting the hum again every time you reset it. jewelry already! congrats

Thanks Treasure Hunter and Deb. I just have to practice more.
