first timer, first find

So i didnt do any research or anything just wanted to figure out how to use a detector. Hit some sidewalk tearouts and a city park circa 1915. Found about 100 pull tabs and this. Now i know youre not supposed to clean coins i never do ever except this nickel was solid red and my first detector find so i shined it up. No date shield nickel .

Thx! Im using an entry level beep and dig tesoro compadre with 8" coil. I had some pretty big holes out there . Thx for pinpoint suggestions!

You will love the pinpointer. After you've hunted with it once, you'll turn the truck around if you ever forget it.

Thx, detected for about 10 hours lol. Only found that and some lincolns. Gonna do some research before i go out next time. Had a great time. Love looking at what/where other people find on this site.

Aye, just started learning the tones/settings of "hits" with my detector. I just started assuming everything was a pulltab and that popped out lol.

I think i might be lol, this site has helped so much. Ive determined the pro pointer is a no brainer it costs more than my detector with a digging tool and holsters lol. But im about efficency and my holes were sloppy and i was in them to long. I just kept to the outskirts of the park also, just to get my rhythm.

I think I dug about 10 beer cans, about 20 pennies and other assorted trash before I found my first nickel and it was a 2001. So that is a fantastic find.

Thanks fellow hunter. Oh i dug up beer/soda cans shredded by a lawn mower all day :/. Did find a coin spill though! 2 modern lincolns

Congrats on your shield nickel! Wow! Advise you to detect again in the area where you dug it as you may dig other old coins there the second time around.

Regarding pinpointers, if budget is tight consider the Harbor Freight pinpointer which is around $25. Mine has worked well for four years, with one simple $4 switch replacement from local electric supply shop early on, & no problems since. If you can afford the pricier pinpointers, then go for that instead. Have Fun! Andi

it all starts somewhere, then you have to have this and then you find that and the next thing you know, you are slowly adding finds and excited about what you have dug up. except for the modern clad and modern junk or trash, you are digging history and that nickle is pure history
