Metal Detecting
I can not begin to stress the truth in the statement- “never hunted out”.
I though I had cleaned out the nearly 1 acre yard that has been in the family for 4 generations. It sits about 1,000 feet off of the Delaware River here in Bucks County PA. While learning how to detect- I had countless first finds here including my first colonial copper, British copper, indian, merc, tombac button etc.
The last few years have been very quiet there with little more than trash. With my insane work schedule, and a 5 year old- I have been out detecting twice in the last year and a half.
With a few hours to spare today- I hit my yard as I have hundreds of times before. The second hole I dug was in a spot my coil must have passed over several dozen times. This time I heard a faint, fast, dirty squeak.
Not more than 45’ from my back door- 8” down was an 1834 Half Cent. Right where the old well was; and right where I have found other old coins posted here in years past.
Not in the best of shape but easily identifiable.
I’ll never cease to be amazed by this hobby. …never hunted out.

Very nice.

Congrats!! Yeah half cents are hard to come by in most areas. It has been quite a while since I put my coil over one.

Nice work. As always those with patience and persistence will continue to shine!

Soil conditions, different metal detector brands/setups, various frequencies and swing directions, etc. are the reasons a place is never truly hunted out. I remember hitting this one spot over and over again and it always produced although it became less and less each time.

Congratulations on the sweet find. :icon_thumleft:

Congrats on your half cent, great find indeed. There is a park in my town that I have hunted hundreds upon hundreds of times. I found a Barber Quarter there the last time I went, I was shocked as I'm certain I went over it before...but NO. Think of it this way, take an 8x11 sheet of paper and draw some squiggly lines all over it with a sharpie marker. This is you with your metal detector, and is an indication of why a lot things get missed! Even though you think you've been over the spot, you probably didn't. Soil conditions and the direction of travel all have an effect too. Bottom line, it's never hunted out. Once again, congrats on your coin!

Very Nice!! Congrats!!

True, golden words. Too many factors and variables as to why, but based on my own experience, it seems impossible to have a truly hunted out site. Great find and Congrats for knocking that one off the bucket list!

What a great find! Congratulations! Totally agree, no place is ever "hunted out!" To many variable factors involved to allow that!
