First V nickel! It’s quite lousy.

Hello,

EDIT: Shield Nickel!

I was hunting some sidewalk stripes in the old-town with my new at max. I got a wheat across the street before I got this weird signal. I actually don’t remeber what the signal was exactly, but I ended up a metal disk too big to be a penny. I thought it was a dirty button.

It was my only real interesting find in the hour or so of hunting, and thought about it in my pouch all day while I worked.

After dinner I tooth picked at it, and low and behold, a faint ‘5’

Thanks for looking! I am a still excited about my oldest coin ever dug. I’ll let the picture do the rest of the talking.

That would be a shield nickel, not a V nickel. Date would be between 1866-1882.
Pretty toasted, but great find. Congrats!

Also- shield nickels have a smaller outside diameter than any other 5c nickel series (V/buffalo/Jefferson, all the same diameter)
Compare it with a Jefferson from your pocket change.

Congrats on an old nickel find, I have only found one shield nic and it was in very bad shape too. They don't survive the elements very well.

I love nickels. Congratulations on an old one.

Congrats on the old nickel. I have one shield and it’s toasted too.

Congrats on the old nic. They rarely hold up in the dirt.

Congratulations on the Shield Nickel. A very nice find.

Congrats on your first Shield Nickel. At least you were able to identify it.

Nice coin! Soon you'll dig 1600's & 1700's coppers all over the place ;)

Excellent save, I would love to find one regardless of condition! Congrats

Good find you made! I only have one, an 1869. Hope you find many more!

Amazing find! Congrats on your oldest coin!

Big congrats on that old Shield Nickel. It took me NINE YEARS to find one but, I DID! So consider yourself blessed to have even a toasted example. Well Done Mate!:occasion18::headbang::icon_thumright:

Not sure when the last time is that I saw one of those surface in WA state, if ever. Huge congrats!!!

Thanks again everyone! Their has to be shield nickels dug in WA before.

The coins weights 3.2+ grams. So, it has lost quite a bit of weight in its life.

When I hunt in town, I feel like a lot of targets have already been extracted by hunters in decades past. I’d love to see what they have found! The mid tones are where the old targets are at I suppose!
