Well last week I found my first indian and this week I get my first V nickel. I had been digging tons of lead head nails which show up like nickels so I was surprised to see this 1887 V pop out. It's also my first 1800's coin. Any ideas on how to clean it up a little?

Congrats on the first V. A nice early one too.

You can place it in peroxide for a little while to loosen the dirt and then soak it in olive oil to get some of the color back. Lightly work the dirt off with a q-tip.

I will try that. I knew that works well with copper but this is actually not only my first V but first nickel period. I've never cleaned one before

If you wanna make it look like a nickel again (it'll probably be pitted though) soak it in a blob of ketchup for about a week. Change the ketchup out when it turns brown.

BTW, what's a lead head nail?

Just my opinion of course. But, if that was my very first V nickel, I might rinse the dirt off. But that would be it. After all, firsts only come once.
It might clean up but, it might not! And you wind up with a pitted slug that you can tell everybody that's my first V nickel! :)

Not sure that the correct name but in my area, all these old tin roofs were put on with nails with lead molded around the head. When hammered, it would flatten and form a leak proof seal.
