Wow! Those are really neat! I did a quick read on them. But will look again later when I have more time. Were you able to learn anything about them?

Thank you, yes there are a lot of interpretation regarding why and who did the petroglyphs. One theory speculates a relationship may exist between these carvings and hunting rituals they also believe they are associated with Shamanic or hunting magic, the Shaman would go in a trance and peck and carve what they would see in there vision quest. In the first photo you can see a Atl-Atl or Lance-Thrower and the Atl-Atl Weights. This site is also home to a few of the only humanoid petroglyph figures in the Owens Valley.

Sometimes I think, and not to take away from the coolness of petroglyphs, it more likely is a case of "Billy, go scratch on the rocks for a while, I'm busy." Talk of Shamans and rituals is mere speculation, as are my thoughts.

These rock carvings were not done by children, would you let your children go play on a 60FT rock face ??? also if you zoom in on some of the photos you will see how deeply they carved them like 1/2" deep. Thanks for your input.

Just joking, Mine Shaft. I couldn't tell the scale from the photos. They are a neat piece of archaic history. Thanks for sharing.

Lol most are low but some are way up there, your welcome.

Okay, I read some of what you are saying here. It also said...

"The local descendants of the Paiute - Shoshone decline to share detailed information regarding the meanings or functions of the rock art."

And that the locations are kept a little bit secretive for preservation.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing them.

I like to visit the petroglyph sites around my area when I can. Thanks for sharing those.

Thanks you guys for the nice comments. Wrightdigger, yes they want ppl to check in before exploring the rock art i guess vandals are taking big chunks of the glyph s, what a shame. tamrock your welcome. Do you have photos of your rock art ? if so please post.

These are a few I pulled from previous posts. It's called pintado canyon in NW Colorado. There were put there by the Utes and Fremont people.

Thank you tamrock, very interesting i like it.

Wow, pretty cool. I always like to check out the petroglyphs and pictographs around Moab, UT when we go out there. That's a different representation than I usually see, but yeah I'd say that's an atl-atl. I don't know about the rest of them, but generally when you see a circular glyph, that represents a shield. Everybody's shield was different and personalized, so in that one pic it's just like those guys signed their names. Fun to speculate if that's a village layout and that's where their individual camps were, or the coach drew up this diagram to show them their positions on the next big hunt.
