The best bang for the buck was the Bounty Hunter Land Ranger Pro when it sold for $240. It must have been flying off the shelf so the price has crept up.

The f22 is a very adequate beginner detector. I made my banner find with one. It was my favorite detector in the under $300 price range

KentuckyDigger has an Ace 150. On another thread he inquired about the F2 difference over the Ace 250. I suggested the F22 over the F2. And SouthFlDigger suggested the Tek Delta 4000 that has been reduced to under $200. All good choices to move up from the Ace 150. The LRP is now in the $280 range. Still for under $300 nothing beats the LRP for control features and the depth matches that of the Delta and F22.

So for what they do for the price, I would suggest the Delta ($200), then the F22 ($229) and the LRP ($280).

To keep in line with the OPs price range, the first two offers more than the Ace 250/350. And with manual and auto ground balance, the LRP tops anything under $300 and even $500, IMO.
