Flakes and Chips

I pick them up, bring them home and keep each site separated. I search the same sites over and over and don't want to keep looking at the same debris. Occasionally, I'll dump out the most recent at look them over. Sometimes I see things the second time, I didn't see the first. Also, I believe that if you get in the habit of picking up the chips and flakes, you're more likely not to overlook something else. A couple of the smallest points that I have found, I thought were flakes before I picked them up and looked them over.

I keep them all and keep stats on the percentages of the different materials found at each site. Glad I did because I found some patterns that I would have never known about like for instance there was no use at all of Ryholite here from the middle to late archaic at all. Also almost every single material I find was from here and slightly south or more often than not from west of here which is critical when figuring out trading routes and what not. Hixton dominates pretty much every site here from paleo through mississippian in over all numbers, all sorts of stuff like that... it's been surprising how much I learned by keeping the flakes, also found some points that would have been missed as mentioned above.

I do!! ;D In the land of no rocks, anything sighted on the ground in the area where artifacts are found, there's only one way it got there...Indians. I hoard it all.

;) RR

I keep nothing but the finest of artifacts.

Just kidding! :D My wife hates my motto, "Bring the creek home, then sort it out."

On most of the sites I hunt, there is far too much debitage to keep it. You could pick up a bucketful without taking a step.

The Arkansas River is another ordeal. You're lucky to find any flakes or anything at all. You find as many points there as you do flakes at alot of locations.

not on my main site i could fill a pickup with material ,i do keep large peices and bladelets.i stopped at 3 5 gallon buckets i did polish some in a tumbler which turned out nice.

i pick all of them up and through them where i never had found any, lol. throws people off

Thats a pretty good one. haha

I dont know how many times I have gone to a field that I thought I was the only one who knew about it and there would be foot prints all over the place.

I kept a lot of the flake blades I found, I also have several of the core pieces of chert.
