I had my hopes up that this was another old coin when I saw it in the plug. It was found in the same area as my 1853 trime. But after getting the mud off it, I'm thinking a flat button without the shank? I can't see any details on it besides what I guess must be where the shank attached to the back. Any guesses? Ideas on age?

Thanks in advance!!

found a similar size - my guess is dandy button from late 1700s? Other comments? I'm still a noob.

Thanks for the input! This one is a toughie for me, noob to this stuff myself. I know the fields were worked by the late 1700's, so it's not impossible. I hadn't guessed that early though.

I've attached pics of the one I found for comparison - Dandy buttons were large decorative buttons on the front of gentleman's long coats - so less likely it was a farmer button if my noob theory is correct - interested in an experts view?

Thanks for the pics! Mine's smaller, and doesn't appear to have any detail (though it could just be really worn from age). So I guess just a typical coat button of indeterminate age? Based on location, I'd guess middle 1800's? But yea, I'm no expert either, so anyone else feel free to chime in! :)

Looks like a early 19th century flat button :icon_thumleft:
