Found this today at a rev war site. I was wondering if this possibly came from a soldier? It says London in the back and has three stars I believe. Thanks fellas!!
Flat buttons were worn by civilians, but during the Civil War, many of the 'good ole boys in gray' had flat buttons on their uniforms. This was due to the economics of the South. It's a good thing we had pride because we certainly didn't have $$$. One piece flat buttons began having back marks around 1790-ish to 1800. The earliest ones has 'raised' letters, and around 1810-ish the back-marks were indented. Yours looks to have raised letters.
To answer your question: Could it have come from a soldier? It's a 50% chance it could have been worn by a Confederate soldier, and a 50% chance it could have been worn by a civilian. I'd like to think the former!
