Delta Flight 2255 from Atlanta to Los Angeles seemed to be an ordinary flight with the exception of Candy, who was the most loving flight attendant I’ve ever encountered. Besides using her Southern charm to quickly defuse every situation, she began her welcome announcement by thanking the handful of uniformed soldiers on-board for serving our country. Her poignant message was followed by applause, and it put into perspective that none of us would be able to do what we do without these brave men and women.

But this transcontinental flight turned out to be everything but ordinary. We later learned, when the captain got on the PA system about 45 minutes prior to landing, that we were transporting a fallen soldier. The plane went quiet as he explained that there was a military escort on-board and asked that everyone remain seated for a couple of minutes so the soldiers could get off first. He also warned us not to be alarmed if we see fire trucks since Los Angeles greets their fallen military with a water canon salute. See my video below.

A few minutes after touchdown, we did indeed have a water canon salute, which I’d previously only experienced on happy occasions like inaugural flights. This time, the water glistening on the windowpanes looked like tears.

Passengers in the airport must have been worried when they saw our plane pull into gate 69A, as we had a full police and fire escort, front and back.

I was on the left side of the plane and later realized that the family could be seen off to the right, standing with the United States Army Honor Guard. According to Wikipedia, each military branch has its own honor guard, usually military in nature, and is composed of volunteers who are carefully screened. One of the primary roles for honor guards is to provide funeral honors for fallen comrades.

When the jet door opened, another military officer addressed the escort who was standing at attention. He then stepped on the plane and told us passengers “I just addressed the escort. It is a sworn oath to bring home, to the family, the fallen.” He paused and then said, “Today you all did that, you are all escorts, escorts of the heart.” And then thanked us for our time and walked off the plane.

As you can imagine, everyone was silent and no one got up, not even that person from the back row who pretends he doesn’t [understand] English so he can be first off the plane. I’m sure most had meteor-sized lumps in their throats and tears in their eyes like I did.

It only got more emotional when I deplaned. There was a large number of passengers, who are normally in a hurry to get home or make a connection, standing by the window to witness something truly moving. To see the Honor Guard and family waiting patiently, while LAX baggage handlers and a military loadmaster removed the flag covered casket first from the cargo hold, was humbling to say the least. I’m not sure if it was the fallen soldier’s mother or wife who I watched slowly walk up to the coffin while a few other family members, wrapped in blankets, stood near with a dozen or so of the Honor Guards standing in salute.

As soon as I saw her reach out to put her hand on her baby’s casket, I walked away.

This ordinary flight became extraordinary and is one that I will never forget.

Thank you to all the military who protect our beautiful country and let us live the lives we are able to lead. Without you we would be nothing. And thank you to the Honor Guard for making sure these fallen soldiers, warriors and heroes are not treated like just any piece of luggage as they used to, but rather with the care and respect they so rightly deserve.

Wow....... Our current Presidential Administration has been so disrespectful of our fallen that it does my heart good to see that the "right thing" can still be done in honor of our fallen heroes.

TNGUNS:

Why do you have to turn a positive thread into a political attack? In my opinion, that's in poor taste.

Good luck to all,

To characterize TNGUNS statement stating the current administration's apparent disrespect for our fallen seems to me like a tame statement of fact rather than a political attack. Thanks, TH and TNGUNS.

Old Bookaroo:

The statement was made to praise the patriotism of those involved. I do not view it as a political attack. I view it as a statement based on fact. Simply tying to bring light to the fact that no matter how disrespected our troops have been by our current administration that the American People still value the life sacrificed by our Heroes. From a political standpoint there is no room for discussion. The Administration's behavior speaks for itself.

Respectfully,

Your reply did nothing to further your point. You just repeated yourself.

You are entitled to your opinion about troops being disrespected. Please note that neither OB nor I am questioning your opinion.

OB simply pointed out that you took a positive story and put a very negative twist on it, unnecessarily. I agree with OB's assessment of your post.

Mackaydon,

Typed mine before I saw yours. Your comment was appreciated.

How is a fact a political attack. This admin has shown disrespect towards our soldiers on many occasions including just recently when they stop the funding to families of fallen heros during the shut down and closing the WWII Memorial when it was the Vets, Vet organizations and the American people who funded it.

Feds paid less than 10% of the costs of the WWII Memorial. ..

Jersyben,

Your motives are apparent. Your point is made. The facts remain the same.

Wonderful post TH.

TH, TNGUNS and Mackaydon, As a Vietnam Vet I agree with the three of you completely and probably wouldn't have stated it as mildly as TNGUN did initially! Thanks for initially posting TH.

TNGUNS:

"No room for discussion?" With all due respect, there is ample room for discussion. I refuse to accept that I'm wrong just because I don't agree with you.

It is my understanding Mr. Obama was the first US President to send letters of condolence to the families of members of the US Military who killed themselves.

You offered your opinion and I offered mine.

Good luck to all,

A portion of the Republican Party decided it would be a good idea to shut down the Federal government. Then several of those fools grandstanded and whined that some of the government functions were no longer in operation.

It's obvious here that the majority of the people posting see things from only one point of view - and that the Ref plays for that team. Fine. That's the game.

I think President George Bush showed astonishing disrespect for the US Military when he used them as props for political photo ops, had to plant questions for them to ask, and restricted who could attend those events in the first place.

Good luck to all,

OB:

When others' opinions are built on a false premise, it is hard to even offer a counter-position because you have to backtrack just to get to "start".

Unclebuck,
I, too, am a Vietnam era vet (USAF '63-'69--942nd Tac. Hospital).
So too, have my comments mellowed out considerably.
Perhaps I should now review that position again.
Don.....

OB:

These people think it is proper to offer one's opinion and deliver it in such a way as to present it as fact. To offer an opposing viewpoint is not a welcome behavior amongst this crowd.

"Here is my opinion and if you dont agree with it then you are just plain wrong". Key word here being OPINION. Sometimes I wonder if some folks understand just what an opinion is...

Hey Treasure Hunter!! AHMEN!! GOD REST THEM ALL!! GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

Shutting down the gov't. is no big deal. It has been done quite often when both sides of the schoolyard can't agree on something. This time the gop DID NOT SAY SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT. They said everything is agreeable except the healthcare law. The dems said they will not waver, they were keeping it in place so TOGETHER they shut down the government. The gop said from the start that they would not allow the US to default on its credit so, in the last minutes, they HAD to cave in to the healthcare law to prevent us from going into default that would have rocked this country. The dems were willing to jump off that cliff if they didn't get their way with healthcare. The average American still respects the service of our military and cannot condone mistreatment of them by anyone, especially a president that, with the wave of his magic Executive Order palm that he uses for gun control, could have EASILY had these fallen and their families taken care of immediately. (nobody in the gop would have that ability) I don't care if Bush used soldiers to make a point as long as he didn't poop on them! o-bama uses little children for his backdrops or uses people in his backdrop for promoting his healthcare law that aren't taking part in the program. I think o-bama should turn in his "peace" prize and resign as Commander in Chief.
No matter what corrupt, illegal, stupid etc. things have taken place in past administrations, anyone's administration, they are all dwarfed by this one's. We don't even know how to spy anymore.

The most corrupt Presidential administrations in modern times have been Richard Nixon's (personal) and Ronald Reagan's (institutional).

You wrote "The average American still respects the service of our military and cannot condone mistreatment of them by anyone..." We can certainly agree on that.

"...especially a president that, with the wave of his magic Executive Order palm that he uses for gun control..." I don't understand that comment.

Good luck to all,

Don't even go there OB. BO picked and chose what to stop to hurt the American people the most. His wife's website stayed up the entire time of the shut down, he paid to have guards run people off and keep people out of monuments and parks.
