Just making final sweeps of some fields before they get turned in a few weeks. This particular spot has given up only one preface before. No flakes nothing.
Seems like a better spot than I expected after today. I found these and a bunch of flakes. One of these is flint with a streak of quartz running through it (its in both pics but is closer to the bottle cap in the second)... the quartz is mixed clear and purple. All of these were heartbreakers except for the black one that I found about 5 steps into a the field.
My partner and I were wondering why we never find any pottery here... We always find a ton at fields near rivers but nothing at this spot which is some distance to running water. The area is rolling hills and it seems the tops of each little hill has a concentration of flint and such. But no pottery. What gives?
Anybody got any idea of ages or names of these middle NC artifacts? IMG_20160313_181040.webpIMG_20160313_180813.webp

The backlit point is made of jasper, and the vein is actually chalcedony. Nice finds!

Wow, Ive never even heard of chalcedony. Maybe you can tell me what this point (found last year) is made of... IMG_20150411_133412_338.webpIMG_20150411_171001_519.webp

If the brown and white point was found down in Georgia it would be a LeCroy and the site without pottery is most likely older than pottery but you may find some boiling stones.

Here we go. Brown jasper with chalcedony veins. Even some purple in 'em. This is from RI. It could be RI jasper or Pa jasper. They are indistinguishable by sight alone, only chemical analysis tells them apart. We find both in RI, though, much Pa jasper imported here. That's what your piece resembles; only reason I mentioned it. I would not know the source of your jasper, but it could be Pa as well; I can't ID your other point.

Chalcedony is one of many cryptocrystalline quartz varieties, as is jasper itself....

yeah, I didn't really notice it at first. I keep all flint (and pottery) bigger than my thumbnail and discovered the vein after the hunt. I thought it was odd. Thanks for the info... I would'a never known.
