Flintlock Powder Tester!

I got back out to my favorite site last weekend for a few hours. The beauty of this home site is that it's at the corner of a soy field far from the farmhouse, and I have not dug a single piece of trash here. Far better is that every target has been Civil War or before.

I had no idea what this thing was when I dug it but I suspected it was special. After a few days of research and help from the What's It forum crew, I determined this is a Flintlock Powder Tester. The firing mechanism matches what would be on a period flintlock. It would be fired the same and the dial at the bottom is numbered. Depending on how far the dial turns upon firing would determine the strength of the powder. These designs date to the late 1700s to very early 1800s. :headbang::headbang:

Got to be a rare item. I'd never heard of one either. What a great find! I'm voting banner.

Thanks man. I couple guys thought this was a toilet valve of some kind haha, but I knew it was something more than that.
