Looks like a dendritic inclusion in quartz to me: kind of moss that grew inside the rock.
 

Tuberale...I think you nailed it. Moss was not one type we had thought of. Thanks a bunch... :icon_thumleft:

I'd have to say your're batting a 1000. Following up on your lead I have found many different examples of " dendritic " Some of the images fromed by this process are beautiful art work by nature.

Dendritic: A branching tree like mark made by one mineral crystallizing in another. A stone or mineral with such a mark.

The stone that my son found is exactly that...
