A couple nights ago I found my oldest US coin to date, an 1830 Capped Bust dime.

In a customer wrapped roll of dimes towards the end of my dime searching I came across a coin that was thin and larger than the others. I thought it was a non-silver foreign coin of some sort for a moment, because I wasn't aware that Capped Bust dimes are a larger size than modern dimes and it didn't look too much like silver to me. I saw the reverse first. I flipped it over and couldn't believe the date. I immediately scanned it for signs of being a copy of some sort. I've weighed it and the weight seems to be what one would expect (2.6 grams - they were minted at 2.7 grams, .1 grams of loss due to wear and the accuracy of my scale seems reasonable to me).

It's in pretty good condition. 510,000 were minted. Based on E-Bay and some catalog prices I saw it's worth somewhere between $30 and $90, I think. Previous to this my oldest dime was 1913 Barber dime (that's the only Barber I've found in ~1.5 million dimes). I never expected get a Capped Bust coin before a Seated Liberty coin, but anything's possible with this hobby.

Recently I found this 1861 Italian 5 Centesimi in a roll of quarters. It's not worth too much, but it's one of my oldest foreign finds and the oldest coin (by far) I've found in quarter rolls.

Happy Hunting,

Brian

Now that's a score you'll never forget - I might not either. It looks to be in really nice condition too - considering it's over 180 years old. Congrats and thanks for the great pics.

Wow and a half! Or in this case...Wow and a dime! Too cool. Congratulations!

Nice! I for one would have thought that would be worth more than $30-$90. I think I would keep it for sure!
