I haven’t been posting many finds lately but I have been detecting, just some average relics, a pocket full of change and a few interesting finds. Last week I detected around a sports complex and found a shot put, the track and field type, looks just like a cannon ball. Had I not been on a shot put field I would think it was a cannon ball, LOL! This find got me going and a cannon ball has been on my wish list for a long time. I have a battle site that should produce such a find so I went there today. Here's a picture of the shot put.
I had detected for about 3 hours near an offensive battle position in a wood line and an open grassy field this beautiful hot sunny day, about 20 mins on the open grass field and 10 directly around what I thought was the battle position in the shaded forest to do a cool down and alternated the areas. I was taking a break when the land owner showed up, talked to him for a few minutes and explained what and where I had detected, he laughed when I showed him 12 Ox shoes in a pile, I was running in all metal mode and digging it all. The land owner told me I wasn’t on the battle position and showed me exactly where it was, about 3 mins walk away, he showed me this overgrown area and said his Grandfather showed it to him. We said goodbye and I went back and got the detector.
I hunted around the over grown area which was about hip high for about 10 mins, stepping on and pushing weeds away and had one target, a small iron hook looking thing then I noticed the front of the battle position, deeper in the wood line was not so over grown so I hit that area. I got a strong iron signal and dug and dug.
Finally, after a good 12” into the hard clay, my pin pointer buzzed and I uncovered a cannon ball, what a sight to see! Here it is in the hole, I pulled it out but put it back for the picture.
The cannon ball was fired 15 September 1704. It’s about an 8 pounder and the size of a baseball.
Here’s a sketch from the archives of the battle I found in the town’s history book. The area I detected is lower left. The castle and town in the distance are off limits, town is long gone with several cellar holes remaining and the castle is in ruins today.
Here are a few other relics I found in the area, a spoon and an ornate hasp.
A small religious medallion, the date 1800 can be seen lower left.
Reverse of the medallion. Thanks for looking and HH, Mike
