We finally got a little bit of rain on Monday so I decided to hit the Ft Ancient spot and boy am I glad I did. When I got there someone else was already there and as I was walking in I met him leaving and it was the brother of a friend of mine. I talked him into going back in with me for a while and we hadn't been there 10 minutes when I saw just a tiny edge sticking out of the ground and I told him that it looked like the edge of a Discoidal. I stuck my screwdriver in beside it and flipped it out and let out a loud "Hell Yeah!!". This is the best Discoidal I have found there. It doesn't have any damage on it anywhere. It's a little rough in the centers from where it was pecked to get the cupped out sections, but it is highly polished everywhere else and has a nice hole drilled through the center plus it has a circle engraved on one side. I didn't get an in situ after I flipped it over because while I was dancing around he reached down and picked it up. lol

I also found 2 Deer Antler Arrowpoints, one has tip damage but is drilled very deep and the other has a nice tip but the whole back side is blown out. I found a couple damaged Points, a decent Scraper, and a Bone Bead that I forgot to get a picture of. I also found another piece of cut Deer Antler. It doesn't show up real well but in the 4th picture you can see the small clean edge that was showing and the only part of the Discoidal I saw.

I only got 2 in situ's today since everything else was just barely showing and I didn't realize they were anything until I flipped them out. I also included a picture showing how deeply the Antler Arrowpoint was drilled

Thanks Joshua. I'm still a little surprised by the find since it was just barely peaking out of the dirt.

very cool finds, that discodal is bada**. would love to pull one of those babies out of the dirt.

Great find Steve, seems like the place you hunt is loaded with goodies. I would have danced too.
Congrats on your super find.

Molly.

Thanks guys and gals. After taking a closer look at it last night I can see a couple of lines that they had started to engrave from the edge in towards the center so I'm pretty sure this one would have had a Sunburst or Wagon Wheel design on it when is was completely finished.

Very cool find Steve. Those don't come out of the ground too often anymore. Congrats.

Hippy

Thanks John. That would be awesome to see this up on the banner. Very cool.

I believe that they were used in a game, Chunky stone is what the natives called it.... It has a great edge, and a drilled hole..... I like it.... John

What were the discoidals used for?

The large Cahokia style Discoidals were used in game called Chunkee. You can Google it and find all kinds of info. These smaller ones we find were probably Game Pieces as well, but I don't think were used for the Chunkee games. There is also speculation that some were used as Spindle Whorls, some as Ear Spools, and some of the plain flat ones were used as lids for Water Jugs.

That is a great artifact, you don't find those around here in my part of the country.
