Found a ring...how do I tell if it's real?

went to a school playground tonight. while the 6 and 3 year old girls were running around, I swung the detector. About 5 minutes into it, I found this little ring. I also found $2.50 plus some pennies.

It looks gold in the pic, but it's actually a silver color, with a heart shaped stone.

What does it say on the inside of the ring?

one way is to magnetic check it ---it it sticks its steel cored / plated---look inside the band for marks---tell us what you see---Ivan

It did not stick to a magnet -- does that indicate silver?

No markings on it.

not always ---it might be some type of pot metal (a lesser metal that is silver toned)---most often silver is marked some way---like .925 or ster for sterling silver--but not always---the magnet test means only that its not a steel cored / silver plated ring ---Ivan

Custom jewelry does not have to be marked, but manufactured jewelry by law has to be marked silver or gold content. If it looks manufactured and not marked, it probably isn't silver.

thanks guys. I didn't figure it was worth much, but it's kinda of neat. First ring I've ever found that looked like it might be worth anything.
