Found an Odd Spiked handle? What do you think it is?

Detecting in a swampy area along the Waccamaw river in Conway SC and I dug this up. There are four sharp metal spikes along the sides and a flat brass bar sticking out the end with graduations on it. The brass bar has numbers and graduation marks on it, is serrated on the bottom and is broken off. It appears to be part of an old machine but why would it have sharp spikes on it? I love a good mystery.

I have no idea what it is, but I'm pretty sure it comes from Middle Earth.
