hey everyone, went for a 2 hour drive at dawn to a place call the swamp. i wanted to find a old winery.well any way i dont find any sign of this place but did find a small out crop of large rocks. so i had a bit of a dig and found very old animal bones and 2 ancient relics. the first is a hand knife for cutting skins and the second was a rounded flat stone for grinding a hard clay called oka. this oka ranges from red to brown in colour and is used for body painting. the hand knife is made from a type of flint. the owners of the items lived here for up to 25,000 years ago. how old these item are im sure but under the law i am not allow to keep them.so i reburied them after taking some pics

Maybe you should let the local archeologists know about the site. Then you could get credit for the find.

Hiya Tinpan,
I'd agree with the other 2 replies.!! It's all part of history and i'm sure a Museum would love to have them in a collection and you could well get a credit for them too.
Go dig em up again and hand them in.
Good luck to you in your future finds and all the very best to you too.
Happy hunting,
Ray.

thank for replys but under the law not museums, not anyone is allow to take these relics.these laws where put in place in the 1980s as part of the historic act and the law is quit clear.

laws...laws..., if you really want them I would just keep them, If someone asks you what they are or the feds show up just say you have no clue, or say you thought they were some cool rocks ;D

Well, to me its like a toss of the coin. On one side you leave them there, where in a few past experiences that I have had, I did the same thing as you, and what happened is that someone else who didn't have the same respect for history as me maliciously and greedily broke off a 30+ foot stalactite, took the prime pieces and left the rest on the ground which ruined it for all of us. Now the cave has been gated and we can't get in anymore. On the other side since you seem to be a person who has the due respect, if you were to go back and retrieve those Items, the would be safe from those other individuals, and will be able to be enjoyed by all you show them to. Ultimately the decision is yours. Deep down inside you know what to do. Good luck and thanks for the pics. Brian

Hey tinpan,
Where did you find them? ( country, state, etc.) Just curious because I've never heard of an artifact being found in the U.S. that was 25,000 years old. I'm not saying that you didn't find any artifacts, I'm just not sure of the age. If you do go back take some more pics. because they cannot take those from you.
Sincerly,
Andy

thanks everyone for your views on these finds and i respect anyone choose on what to do about this matter.in the 1980s this law was made as part of a reconcilliation treaty between indigenous peoples and the gov. becauce for the first 250 years of white rule these people where treated badly and it was time to heal the wrongs of the past.the indigenous people got land rights and the right to protect ancient sites from every body.i wish i could keep these relics but it would mean more trouble than they are worth.there are many other things i can keep and that will make for this..

tinpan p.s sometimes the law sucks

I have head of this before in Australia from my friend there.. If you report it, there is a good chance that the Aborigines(SP) Will try and take the land and say it is their ancient holy place or something like that...My friend said when he brought something home like that one time, His father was really mad and told him to take it back and hide it... So Sad!

What a deal? Where's the positives for them remaining in the ground? None. And the people are using them for their own benefits in land ownership, as it appears in this case. What it does is keeps the modern day peoples from learning about the people of the past, and it's a shame. There could be a change in the law to help preserve what isn't being handled correctly now, this could designate a pocket of revenue for the government, from new jobs of doing just as you have done, to museums to hold the pieces, etc. It only takes one person to start an act that ends in change. Nice thread!

It's the Hunt not the Kill !! You've got the pics for "bragging rights".

very good point :) I would at least turn them over to the indigenous people and say you cant reveal where you got them :-\

Let me know where you bury them at.LOL

hi everyone, BRAGGING RIGHTS was not my intent at all. first these relics of this nature are common and have been fold in back yards.archeologists have dated relics and remains in australia far older than i first started {40,000 years plus} i dated only 25,000 years so i am only a half brag ahahahahahah i only posted these items as point of interest and something different.the remark ITS THE HUNT NOT THE KILL i understand what you mean.i spend far more time researching than mding and many times go home empty handed but had a good time any way thanks for all the different replys on this post

It is a sad state of things when you can not even donate your findings to a museum....But I know what it is to find something and then having to throw it away...
Last year I found what I thought was a kitchen handle of some type, I kept it in my car for two months together with other assorted findings.

When I finished cleaning the stuff, the kitchen handle turned out to be a pipe....not a peace pipe or an old man's pipe, mind you, but a ---- pipe....I had to throw it away away even though it was a nice looking utensil...

I was glad I was not pulled over during the time that crazy pipe was in my car....

My hats off to you tinpan. That took a lot of self discipline. I just don't think I could have done it. Personally, If it were me, I'd be looking at them right now showing them off to my friends and family and giving them as much of the history behind them as I could. Again haats off to you. HH
