The bottom has a little protruding 'pin' on it and it is quite heavy.

Any ideas?

An old plumb bob weight?

I agree. It looks like a vintage PlumbBob.

Looks like someone was turning a hammer head on a lathe, that little pip is where the piece separated when the parting tool got deep enough. I've made a few in my time. That pip would've been filed off and the piece drilled for the handle. Don't know why it wasn't finished.

The little pip appears to be of a different composite, would that affect your statement at all? I like your idea the best so far as you can see circular marks like what using a lathe would leave.

Edit: I take that back, it's definitely the same material.
