Relic Hunting
Went today to a recently excavated confederate camp that we've been working. We took off about eight.inches of dirt and got down total the original layer bullets relics were everywhere. They were all still about 5 inches important ground. This land has been field for hundreds of years and was a major camp for confederates. Found this token or whatever in the same hole i found between 9-10 round balls. The token says C.W. and in the center is a large 5. size of a quarter and about as thick as a dime. They had sutler store.and.commissary plus a very large supply train. Please help me dig into the.history of this. It has little rays or lines along edges on front and back is plain as far as i can't tell

Neat, definatly coinage, i found something kind of similar not far from where you might be. It wasnt far from the Allatoona Pass area. Let me know if you want to hook up...exchange some good spots.

Cannonball may have better luck IDing it with just that photo but the photo isn't letting me use to zoom view on your photo, maybe a better close up would help!

Here's a better pic. The backside has the same lines around edges as the.front.

Nevermind i know what u meant. This came from approximately 12 inches underground where approximately 150 barracks where during war. The ground was just recently broke by me and i got down to original layer and found all the bullets and this token in same exact area

Seems close. But mine appears alt older wouldn't u think. Important not sure though its all stamped even number. If this was used during war what would they have a token like this for. If its even the same company. Could even be something else. The men that were here also came from a camp a short distance away of about 20 miles called camp walker

From what i read camp walker was a major confederate training facility where 10's of thousands of troops were stationed and relocated after training was over to different camps and regiments

One thing I am sure of is that during the Civil War not many, if anyone, called it the "Civil War" or used "C.W." to identify tokens or coinage. 150 years of earth-movers, sub-soiling plows and tillage could have put all sorts of things at 12" to 14" levels.

Ok. I got that. No one said it was to mean cw. The area i found it in has remained the same since the war. Been in the family since the war and have never turned that with a plow. There is still remnants of the original log structure barracks and chimneys. As i cleared that off i got to the base layer of original dirt. I found the bullets in the same hole along with camp lead and oyster shells

I don't know if this one would have been used in the Civil War, it does appear to be older then most of the pay chit tokens i am looking, from the research I pulled up it looks like these pay chits were popular from the 1880s to 1910..
