Post a photo of the back of the button. Easier to date a button by the back of it.

Thanks for your response. As you can see, there was no inside to this "button". It was 6" or 7" down. I researched it as much as I could through Google, but had no luck matching it with anything. It looks very old. And I've found a Japanese coin minted around 1700 and a couple of Civil War bullets, all in the same little field. So who the heck knows.

It's not an American military button.

Two piece buttons weren't around in the 1700's, so it has to be from the 1820's and up.

It appears to be a 20th century civilian "blazer" button.

That's helpful information. Thanks. So, off someone's coat perhaps. Which would make it a whole lot harder to identify I guess. It sure was an interesting find. I'm building quite a collection of not-so-historically significant discoveries like that!

Kiros is right on. Modern blazer button with French Republic coat of arms.

Thank you DCMatt. You found it! Thank you for your help. I found another button (a one piece) shown in the group photo of objects I've discovered in the field I've been working. It looks like copper with patina. But I'm not sure. It's diameter is about the size of a dime. Could this one be older?

Here's a clue for the correct ID of many "dug/excavated" 20th-Century blazer/sportscoat/jacket buttons. Look for remnants of "black enamel" or "black finish" around the button's raised emblem. You can see the black enamel or finish all over the non-exacavated blazer button in the photo posted by DCMatt, and some remnants of it around the raised emblem on Habanerojefe's excavated example of the same button.

Manufacturers apply the black enamel/finish to "highlight" the emblem on some civilian blazer/sportscoat/jacket buttons. You can clearly see it in these photos of another sportscoat button, in this case a golfing jacket, in exacavated and non-excavated condition.

I am aware of only one version of American Military button which has black finish... the World-War-One-to-1923 US Army "Great Seal of the US" button.
