Found in 50's yard

Got out MDing a little in neighbors yard...house built in 195o's. This is one of my unidentified finds. Small round white marble knob with brass center, star on top. Steel shaft 3" long comes almost to point, squared on point end. What is it?

It's a decorative furniture nail.

Wouldnt the marble be in danger of cracking when hit with a hammer?

Its rounded like a door knob, but smaller. Maybe from a bi-fold or closet door?

I could be wrong, but I think you'd have put the marble part on after you drove the nail in 80% of the way. It's probably rusted on by now. I thought it may have been a dresser drawer knob at first.

Good work Jim. They look similar, but I just dont think this is a nail. It has 4 flats on the bottom, looks like made to fit into a square hole. I still think its for some kind of door. The decorative part may be rusted on but that would mean no nail head and if it mushroomed at all from the hammer, it wouldnt fit on.

Good deal - I'll keep thinking about it... :)

Maybe it is porcelain. Looks like a small version of these antique porcelain doorknobs without the "nail" part and star. :-\
...they also have a square shaft.

Geeze, what did I say right off the bat?

Yes - you did, which is what made me look for a picture of them...
Sorry, I just dont think the picture hanger guess is right. The picture of them shows them to be 2-1/4 to 4-1/2 inches in diameter. Mine is less than 1 inch diameter. I also believe these picturehanger/nailcover things are flat on the backside. Mine is shaped more like an antique doorknob with the brass center sleeve. The shaft or "nail" becomes 4 sided flats on the bottom last inch. What do you think?

I truthfully believe it could have filled a number of purposes... I dunno about that square pointy shaft though.
