Hello Forum,

I found this in the woods. When I first found it, I thought it was a fuse to a canon. Then after getting it cleaned up, I noticed all of the groves in it. Does anyone have any ideas on what this thing is?

Thanks ticndig. Mine has a bar that goes across the inside, but I must say they do look similar.

It's a grommet. The fingers held it inside a round hole in rubber or canvas, that one looks to have been a vent or snap?

Ticndig is correct about your find. It is definitely a part from a late-1800s-through-early-1900s umbrella. You can see it in the scan of the original US Patent Office diagram for that version of umbrella. The photograph shows the umbrella's "canopy spines" fit into the slots around your find's edge. Credit for the photo goes to T-Net's Ironman, who dug the nearly-complete umbrella you see in the photo.

Your part held the spines at the top of the umbrella's shaft, with a pin through it to lock it firmly in place on the shaft because unlike the lower spine-collar yours does not move.

Very cool! I also found the top of the parosol I think. See the center item in the attached picture. I’d love to re-purpose it in some way. Thanks everyone for the quick ID.

I think you are right about the parasol top.

Here is a picture that I found on the web Gene Mean. It looks just like the top I found.
