New to this site so please let me know if I'm missing anything or doing anything incorrectly.

I recently bought a relatively cheap md for my 10 year old and myself to play around with as something to do together. We had found some old bottles in the yard (see picture) previously when I was digging a hole for the fence post and I'm always finding glass and pieces of ceramic every time after it rains and I have found 20+ marbles, so I knew we could find some cool stuff eventually. If it helps, I was able to track one of the bottles back to the 40's soda factory that had burn down 2 times!

Of course when we first got started, we kept hitting everything metal (see the picture with all the items) but then we got the hang of it and were able to narrow down what we actually dug up.

I need help with 2 items. #1 is the badge - I have looked everywhere but cant find anything like it. Its very heavy compared to a real badge (wife's dad was a police chief starting back in the 50's) and its badly decayed.

#2 is the "marble" - its not glass (see magnified picture). Did they make marbles out of some other types of material (stone maybe buts its awfully round)

Any help is greatly appreciated. Oh BTW I live just south of Charlotte, NC in South Carolina.

Welcome to Tnet! Looks like you may have an interesting yard. I can't help I.D. the pin/badge, but, the marble is probably one made of clay. Have fun!

Can't be much help either just wanted to say welcome to treasure net and yes marbles have been made of clay, rock, ceramic, and other materials that mother nature has provided... Have fun discovering old/new things with your boy and HAPPY HUNTING:icon_thumright:

Wow that's some cool stuff the on thing is to learn how to safely clean old relics which I'm not good at hope you get an I'd on that pin or badge looks really old this hobby can be addicting just a warning lol

I talked with a police officer today who is actually a history nut with all things related to police. I lucked out when I went in the station!

He looked back through old pictures he had (back to 40's) and it didn't match anything local but he started thinking back and said that it looked like military and probably not American. Saw some similarities in some British military badges but nothing to close. I keep you posted.

FYI, to earlier post, YES this is addicting. I came home today and did some more of the yard and found 3 more complete bottles (not all in picture) a shell case, piece of shotgun shell, a penny (not old but still fun), another glass marble, brass graduation button, and some other button yet to be identified.20190904_205214.webp

Welcome to TreasureNet. That badge may be a rosette. Keep Swinging!!!

Update

Cleaned up the shell casing and the shot gun shell piece.

The shell case says " L C 42" which i think was Lake City Ammunition Plant back in 1942. The interesting thing though was that this was a military ammunition plant, so did they sell some of this ammunition to public?

The shot gun shell piece is even more interesting I think. It says U.M.C. Co. New Club No 12. If I'm reading the info correctly, this shell dates back to the 1890's? Can anyone confirm this is the only time period that these were made?
