From what I can see in the pictures, it looks to me like a modern bullet that has been fired and mushroomed from the impact.

This could possibly be a Williams Cleaner Bullet with the round zinc base crushed by impact. That's what it looks like to me. If so, it would be a bullet from the War of Northern Aggression. These bullets when fired would spin through the rifling of the muskets barrel and the round flange on the base would pull with it black powder deposits from the barrel as it exited the musket, somewhat cleaning the rifle barrel. These were used mostly by the Union troops.

Exactly what I was thinking. Lot of lead for a modern and the base has a zinc look to it.

How about providing a side view? Does the bullet have rings or any other identifying feature on the side?
