Found on 1800's era Tobacco/cotton farm

Ron found this at an old farm we hunted over the weekend. This seems to be very old. It is about 3 inch diameter and the twisted wire about 3 inches long, may have had a small loop at the end. Any one have any idea what it might have been for?

What do you mean by bit?

When in the horse's mouth, you can make them 'gee' or 'haw,' (turn right or left) Breezie
