Found on 1840's North Carolina Farm - Large Cent Counterstamped

Hi,

This was found about 4 inches deep near the Kitchen at an old 1840's built Farm house outside Raleigh, North Carolina. It is a counterstamped Large Cent, with unknown date (other than pre-1858 due to large cents being phased out after 1857).

Here's the front (actually, it used to be the "back" for the large cent):

The L appears to be in a heart shape so my thought (and also that of others on the "What is it" board) was that it was a love token. Anyone seen anything similar to this in the past? If so, please help to shed some light on this.

And here's the back (used to be the front when it was only a large cent):

You can barely see the outline of the matron head. Unfortunately, there is no imprint remaining of the date. :(

Thanks for looking! This was a great hunt and very enjoyable. It's my first good find

Enjoy and HH!

Nice! Don't recall ever seeing one with a stamp like that.
