Could it be some sort of a bracket or something that attached (fit over) the mast, boom or some other part of the ship? Heavy duty and made to last!
 

Very, very cool find.

I think Doc is right---definitely a "spar collar" or "gooseneck" fitting...

It is tough to say on which spar it was used...

Awesome stuff...

I would rather find something like this than a common variety cob or other coin...

I see you are in Delaware...a most interesting area for shipwrecks...
