Congrats on a couple of great Seated Liberty quarters, DigginItUp! Those would give any collector the Christmas spirit!

Technically, all coins minted by the United States from 1793 to 2007 are legal tender— can be spent as ordinary money— and are worth face value only.

In other words, as far as the government is concerned, an 1893-S U.S. silver dollar in Extremely Fine condition is worth exactly that... $1. However, if you bought the same silver dollar in a coin shop, it would cost about $15,000.

in 1964 most US coins were switched for silver to a clad composite of 75% copper and 25% nickel. you dont find hardly any silver US coins in circulation anymore because people started to save the silver ones.

Yes, you can still spend them, but people usually don't as they are worth more in metal value and collectable.

yes only a moron would spend highly valuible collector type coins for "face value" -- maybe a a child who gets into the parents or grandpas money collection might take it to the local store for toys or candy (and get their butt beat if they get caught doing it )------ or maybe a theif that takes whatever he can find -- normally folks do not spend rare money of this type even though you can of course --- Ivan
