So after taking the holidays off, stopped by my dump bank on the way to pick up my order of halves. I had my son with me and I noticed two dimes in the trash can next to the counting machine. I asked my son to grab the dimes out of the trash and he came up with a regular dime and this... pretty shot on condition but figured someone in here might be able to identify. Thanks in advance!

it looks old no idea but great find

You dug a Spanish real out of the garbage. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_real
You'll need to wait for a more well-versed coin expert to look at this thread to tell you exactly which kind of real you got.
Very cool find!

Ok guys, after a little research I believe I have a 2 Reale from Carolus IIII's (IV) reign. It was the "IIII" that help us identify the who. I further verified it as a 2 Reale by measuring its diameter as 25mm. Carolus IIII's reign was from 1788-1808.

Realise it's shot on condition but an amazing find to me!!

close shot of both sides in daylight needed

looks like Carollus IIII 1 Real, spit in shiny side of aluminum foil & wrap it around coin for a minute, then rinse coin to remove dirt & stains. need MM, date (should be below the bust of Charlie), it be SILVER :icon_thumright:

Port Ewen Ace, thanks for the info. Unfortunately, the images I posted are the best I could get. No date is visible due to wear. However, as mentioned in my post directly above your response mentions the info I was able to get based on other factors. I do believe it is a 2 Reale based on the coin measuring 25 MM in diameter. Also, based on the “IIII” being about the only characteristic that can be seen, it is almost certain from Carolus IIII’s reign which puts the coin between 1788-1808.

Thanks again!

That's when you bring a garbage bag and ask em if you can take out the trash!

That is a great find! I bet no one else on the forum has found one in the trash can of a bank!

No Way That's Incredible!! Ask Them If They Would Be Willing To Save You All Their Junk Throw Away Coin. They Probably Throw Away More Then You Think. All They Can Say Is No.
Odds Of You Finding Another Is One In A Million Though!! :headbang:

Wow!! That’s incredible great find!!

I have a few of my banks SAVE me the internal Trash Bin contents that come off the coin counting machines into a small bag/container, and give it to me every now & then. Usually coins that are bent, stuck together, foreign, magnet holds, and dirt fuzz & trash. Sometimes small jewelry of 925 sterling, several years ago got two men's gold rings different times but same bank. Some interesting finds, sometimes.

Imagine the stories that coin could tell:notworthy:
