I found this rock while metal detecting in western MA along the VT border today. Not really sure what it is...any ideas? And yes, this is dental floss (aka redneck jewelry), lol. Thanks.

The holes in the material do look to have been put there with intention - what it all means , I haven't got the foggiest ?

Don’t know, but I’m a believer in that there are no straight lines in nature. Interesting find. Could those have been hammered through by an old square nail?

Are you certain that is a stone? That thing looks like a blob of metal to me.

Interesting !!! Congrats!!!

I can only guess there were once crystal formations within the matrix of that rock that were easily broke down by time and erosion, because they were softer or less resistance to other natural chemical elements leaving those voids within that rock which is less resistance to the natural elements of time and erosion.

If it's metal, it might be this

It looks like a melted box lock for a door.

Tamrock has the answer! Maybe galena crystals decayed out of the rock

Amazing what Mother Natyre can do

Yup, definitely stone even though the picture makes it look metallic. Even though I would swear the indentations were man made, I am strongly considering that it is actually natural. But, it looks so unlikely that any type of crystals were in this stone where the indentations are. Trying to be open minded.

The square holes are where cubic pyrite crystals weathered away and eventually fell out of the matrix rock, 100% natural. There have been similar river finds to this on here before, they are cool finds though!

Since I've collected minerals long before I had a detector this is easy! What was once there were pyrite crystals. The eventually turned to limonite and the acid in the ground reduced them to dust.

Pyrite and limonite are iron ores.
