Found this can't tell what it is platinum maybe

OK so found this metal detecting in central California this summer. from first look I thought it was iron pyrite but it is a silver almost platinum color. it also has a mix of gold coloring in the rock. it's dimensions are 5 inches long and about 3 1/2 inches around and weighs a whopping 2.88 pounds. is there anyone on here that is a gemologist or geologist of some sort that can help identify this rock and if so what are we looking at in terms of what it is worth? thanks for looking

I would have thought iron pyrite too, but we both may be wrong. I would suggest also posting this in What is it and in the rocks/gems forums. I am sure you will get the help from the experts there. Good luck and keep us updated.

its hard to say. it is very hard i tried to score a piece with my knife and ended up taking a chunk out of my knife blade. so it is very hard what ever it is i have just never see iron pyrite in a two tone color form like this before.

Gold and arsenic occur as a coupled substitution in the pyrite structure. In the Carlin, Nevada gold deposit, arsenian pyrite contains up to 0.37 wt% gold.[4] Auriferous pyrite is a valuable ore of gold.''

Could be high-graded gold/silver ore..

I've found some large,heavy chunks like that just outside of Trona,Ca. My guess is these are high-graded ore stolen during the mining process late 1800s/early 1900s. The mountain ranges bracketing Trona have dozens of old gold and silver mines. Fortunes were dug here. You might websearch gold in the Argus Range.

Get a piece of unglazed ceramic tile, like the back side of a piece of tile you would put in a bathroom. Rub a pointy part of your find on the unglazed tile. If it makes a black mark it is pyrites if it makes a gold color mark it is gold. If it makes a gray or sliver mark you may have silver.

i found a local geologist that i made an appointment with and he is going to take a look at this piece next week sometime. he said there is a chemical test they can do to determine exactly what it is. hope is worth something.

The pyrite here is gold colored and cubed. I have a whole mess of it that me and the daughter dug at a local quarry.

i thought pyrite is magnetic. this does not give off a magnetic field at all
