This is prob. your best place to start. is it iron/magnetic if it is then the salt water probably rendered it beyond repair but not worthless if its got some age to it.
 

You can try electrolysis, however it may be to far gone from the salt water. Neat piece though.

I have never tried electrolysis,but from what I have seen and heard it works well.Like ResurrectedVirginia said I think you have to be careful with it in some cases.Maybe take a wire brush,or even better a electric wire brush to it, it should clean it up well.Just be sure to use eye protection. neat find!
 

Don't know but sure looks old...
 

It doesn't really scream hatchet to me...reminds me more of a broken piece of a cast iron grate broken up, but I could be mistaken, judging by the picture alone
