pictures show the front and back. Looks to be either copper of brass. I dont see any indication that it could be sort of pendant, or anything of the sort.

Cool find! It appears to be a corps badge of the Union Army 1st Division, XII Corps. There should be some evidence of solder on the back side where a pin would have been attached if so. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XII_Corps_(Union_Army)

Although this is a great guess... I would have to lean more towards a "hat star"... and perhaps you are correct... I am not sure on this.

I say this because of several things... one being it is crude... these were worn on the hats of Texas born Civil War soldiers to show the Texan pride mainly.

There seems to be a bar pin solder mark in the center back... but the pictures are really bad and hard to really see the item.

OP should take better pictures and post them.

OH... GoldDiver... I have seen the one you refer to and it does look like the one online posted which I was unfamiliar with... until now... and wonder why that itsy one is the only posting of such an item.

Main reason I have problem with the guess is... Anything CW-Military would have IMO not been so thin and crude... and the star edges look "camp made" not stamped etc.

here is a link with Texas Stars... https://www.thestoryoftexas.com/discover/artifacts/texas-hat-stars

ALSO... the could be a "Civil War vets star" - https://www.flyingtigerantiques.com/civil-war-corps-badge-made-for-veterans-in-star-shape.html

I agree, camp made hat star, Texas or Mississippi troops. Saw a friend dig one similar at a camp near Culpeper, VA

I agree, this does appear to be a hand made item, likely fashioned in the field. I don't know why I didn't think of the Texas star right away but that is a great possibility also. Knowing which troops had the skirmish at the site would help narrow things down a bit.
