Relic Hunting
I rode around town the other evening looking for a site to hunt for some civil war relics but nothing was going on. Hit one old spot and dug a few pieces of old brass but nothing good. As the day was about over a couple of friends called me and said they'd found a button coin shooting and asked if I could tell them what it was. We got together and I looked at it and it turned out to be an early 1900's musician button and wasn't military. All they'd dug other than that was clad. It was real late and I told them I knew of a spot I had dug an old token at yrs ago and maybe there might be another one.We hit it an hour before dark and I dug one and Joel dug 2 and his wife dug one. We immediatley contacted the states premier token expert and he said they were good ones! Here's mine, 2 others were of the 5 cent denomination. The token expert said in all the yrs he'd been collecting he'd seen 3 of the 5 centers but never seen a 2 &1/2. He offered me 100.00 for mine so it wasn't a bad find for a spur of the moment hunt an hour before dark :laughing7:

So . . . . did you take the cash!? :icon_scratch:

Just kidding man, nice find! :laughing7:

2 1/2 cents worth of ice = $100 bucks. Sounds like a groovy deal to me.
Nice find

So you must have sold it to Tony Chibbaro. In his book, SOUTH CAROLINA TOKENS including his three supplements, the only listing is for the 5 center, so yes, yours is rare. Tony is a good person to deal with.

The McLaughlin Company operated a general store during the late teens and early twenties.

Thats a cool token there Pete! Rare one too!

Yes I did :laughing7: If I dig a relic or coin and it's not older than 1865 I don't keep it. I'm into american civil war & american revolutionary war finds. The newer coins and finds hit ebay or get sold to someone around SC that's interested like this token. The premier SC token collector loved it. Heck I dug an 1883 dog licence last year and got 200.00 dollars for it on ebay :laughing7: Just goes to show a find no matter if you don't care for it can still be valuable to somebody. I'm a relic hunter by nature, but it's all treasure hunting right ;D

Yes I sold it to Tony and he is a super nice guy. I have one of the 5 centers on ebay right now for my friends.

Great token

I can't bring myself around to selling any of my finds. I have given away a bunch of stuff. With gold prices where they are I should sell some of the stuff I don't like.

I would have researched it a lil more before I sold it... since it's so rare I am willing to bet there was suppose to be another zero to actual price... 1000.00

This token post-dates 1875.
In 1876, the previous name for this town was changed to St. Matthews.
A most interesting token!!
