thats really cool max a brass spike still in the wood! i wonder how old it is? might be a foolish question but, when did they stop building ships with this kind of construction?

GDM,

interesting find.

Any knowledge on what the age may
be? Do keep us posted if you find out
any information on possible origin of that
type of item.

Thanks for posting.

That is a super relic!

I have found a handful of brass spikes at coastal shipyards, but never actually seen one in the wood.

The ones I found are square. Some are about 8" long X 1/2"+ square, with a square head. The shipyard where most came from dated from about the mid to late 1800's. Other shipyards in the area date from the early 1700's. I also found some round ones with a saucer shaped head that appeared to be more refined than the square ones. The casting marks are still visible on most, and some have dents on the heads from the hammer blows. These were found in the muck of the tidal flats, where the ways are still visible. They were found on the outskirts of the ways, which makes me think that they were dropped by the builders during construction.

Very cool find!................HH

If its a wreck from the mid-1800's, perhaps you could research it. There may be coins/artifacts on the beach there. Try the local historical society, besides googling shipwrecks in that area.

anyone hear from Max lately ?

Someone I know saw him swinging on the beach recently was what I was told.

I like that, that will make an interesting conversation piece for sure.
