Looks like one of those signet rings they used on a blob of wax to seal a letter, just a guess there.

They are Chinese characters. Often good luck, fortune, etc. Possibly happiness and tranquility are closer on this one.

I was going to go with Egyptian, but the sides look a little like a dragon? Have you thought of pressing them into some clay (Sculpey craft clay, or wax) to get a better idea of what they look like? Also if it's a signet, the pattern would be reversed on the ring, show true with an impression, so you can ID it easier. Just a thought?
