It looks like it is Anasazi. Both white on black and black on white. Also some basket weave style in there as well. I have been hunting in the area that you described last week. Finding any obsidion flakes or and projectile points? Nice pot sherds.

Lots of pottery shards around, no flakes or other workings (besides the possible manos above). There isn't any obsidian or flint in the area, or even close by (very few rocks of any nature). I've only found one point in five years (can't locate it now, hmmpf!) and it is a very old style not the intricate chipped type I have found in other regions. Yesterday I also found what I thought was a point but now believe to be a hide scraper after being advised by another member. (pics below)

Very nice colors in those, but out of my area of knowledge. Thanks for showing them

Thanks for the input guys.

The pottery displayed on the linked page is beautiful. Wish I could find enough matching pieces to reassemble something like that! The tenth picture on this sub-page (GallupBlackonWhite) leads me to believe that the following shard might be something similar:

I know very little (trying to learn) about all of this, so I'm not sure if it's a snake or even Anasazi. Where I live has been inhabited by Anasazi, Navajo, Apache, Hopi and Zuni. Fascinating history!

That to me looks like a leg to a bowl. But just a guess.

Hey, now that you mention it, I can easily see it as the leg to a bowl. I'm assuming you mean a three-legged one, something like how the bottom of a dutch oven looks. It makes more sense than the handle to a jar because the mouth doesn't look like it was attached to a rim.

I was happy that the link provided by Birdcloud led to a pic of a snake used in any kind of Anasazi pottery. Truthfully, I'm not educated enough in the matter to even be sure of Anasazi orgin. I am going only on color/pattern and of course location. I live on land that has remained relatively untouched by modern-times and the history fascinates me due to my primitive surroundings. There is a lot to learn and I appreciate the help you all give.

This year was an abundant year for rattlesnakes. It was disconcerting because I am often barefoot around camp. Luckily their reach isn't all that far and one of my cats is good at over-extending them.

I like snake boots myself.

Now there's some irony...snakeskin boots as protection against snake-bite. I don't like killing animals/reptiles needlessly but am not zen enough to share living quarters with a poisonous serpent. I let the cat "tease" them into position and then the ka-bar makes short work of 'em.

About that snake-shard being a bowl-leg. I think the way the head part starts to flare out just before the break is a strong indicator that you are correct.

enjoy the hunt,

enjoy the hunt,

Snake boots are made out of leather. And the new ones are made out of canvas layered with other materials to prevent a snake bite. Check out Bass pro shops and then type in snake boots in the search and they will come up. They will ship them to you after you pay. I have a pair for the fields and woods.

Lol, that clears it up...I was imagining those fancy high-heeled cowboy boots some fellas like to wear, which are definitely not my style. Out in the field and within society I always wear a stout leather boot because I've never been fond of sneakers. Those snake-boots (not snake-skin like I wrongly corrected) actually look pretty rugged. I may get a pair.

cheers,
