ok here it is - your "patron saint" type catholic medal is -Sainte Anna de Beaupre (saint on front) - there is a shrine in Quebec , Canada (the French speaking part of it) * called the basilica of Saint Anne de Beaupre (its the building on the rear ) a small chapel was first built in 1658 * and upgraded ever since till modern day -- sick people often travel there in search of a "mircle" --reportly many become "cured"

It has a trace of gold gilt and appears to have a makers mark on top of loop reverse.

I'm guessing late 1800's?

could be just about any time frame --although gilting -- (basically a form of thin gold plating) was quite common for buttons from 1770 thru 1830 era ... the makers mark could tell you more ..if you can run it down ..
